About Sennheiser Aviation
Sennheiser Aviation
We know safety depends on reliable communication.
In 1982, at Lufthansa's request, Sennheiser developed the first audio headset for cockpit communications.
Since then, working closely with pilots and airlines, Sennheiser has continued to develop new solutions
for the aviation sector. Major innovations in Sennheiser's aviation and ATC products include NoiseGard™
and ActiveGard™ active noise compensation and Peak Level Protection technology.
With Sennheiser's NoiseGard™ technology, miniature microphones pick up ambient noise and electronics
calculate the appropriate amount of anti-noise required. This means that the headphones eliminate most of the
particularly disturbing low-frequency noise, such as engine roar or wind noise. This technology has undergone
further developments over the past few years. The NoiseGard function can reduce ambient noise by up to 90% at
the push of a button, enabling pilots to experience clear and controlled communications in air traffic and
helping to reduce stress levels and fatigue.
ActiveGard™ technology also protects hearing: loud disturbing signals that can suddenly arise in
radio-telephone communications are automatically lowered by ActiveGard from 105 dB. Harmful peak levels are
not just cut off, but compressed so that voice and sound quality is perfectly maintained. Once the volume is
reduced to an agreeable level, ActiveGard™ automatically sets it at the previous volume. The system
therefore offers protection and ensures that no loud signals reach the ear. Sennheiser's Peak Level
Protection operates in a similar way to ActiveGard™. While ActiveGard™ is used in ATC headsets,
Peak Level Protection offers protection from 110 dB in pilot headsets.
Whether flying jet, propeller turbine, or piston aircraft, all kinds of demands are made on headsets used in cockpits.
Voices should be broadcast clearly, external noise screened out effectively and the headsets must remain
comfortable for continuous wear over lengthy periods. Above all, they must always operate faultlessly.
Safety and reliability are always a top priority at Sennheiser.
Sennheiser also designs headsets specifically for air traffic control. Noise-compensating microphones ensure
clear and faultless voice transmission, and most models have ActiveGard™ technology to protect air
traffic controllers from unexpected acoustic bursts in radio-telephone communications.
